The Miami University women's field hockey team split matches against Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina last weekend. The RedHawks blew out Appalachian State 10-1, and fell to No. 1 UNC 3-0.
Senior midfielder/forward Valentina Neira and junior midfielder Bea Dechance both had hat tricks in Miami's home win over Appalachian State Saturday. Neira also added four assists, giving her seven points in the game.
"It was a great win, it was really needed," Dechant said. "We finally got to score a lot."
It was just the second win of the season for the RedHawks (2-7), who have played six ranked teams this season.
The RedHawks faced No. 1 UNC Sunday, falling 3-0.
"We didn't play too well in the first half, I feel like we didn't play our game," Dechant said. "After half time we got back and pushed ourselves harder and pushed ourselves against them. They only scored once in the second half … the second half we played really well against UNC. We competed well against the No. 1 team."
Senior back Shannon Regan thinks the team would have approached the UNC regardless of the outcome against Appalachian State.
"I think that we went into both games with the same strategies," Regan said. "I think that despite our win, we would've been confident going into the UNC game. We knew it was going to be a good game."
Regan said the team learned from its battle with UNC.
"I think that in the UNC game we learned we need to compete for 70 min," Regan said. "When we let down that's when they scored."
The RedHawks next game is against New Hampshire 6 p.m. Friday in Durham, New Hampshire.
