Abandoning the meaning at the Met Gala

(05/09/22 11:00pm)

The first on-schedule Met Gala since 2019 happened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday evening. The gala coincided with the opening of the second part of the museum’s Costume Institute’s two-part “In America” exhibit. The first part, which debuted last September, was subtitled “In America: a Lexicon of Fashion,” and the corresponding gala’s theme was “American Independence.”

I underestimated “Minari:” why I was so wrong

(03/16/21 4:30pm)

“Minari,” the semi-autobiographical film from Korean American writer/director Lee Isaac Chung, follows the Korean American Yi family after they move from Los Angeles to a plot of land in rural Arkansas. It is made clear early on that the move was the family patriarch Jacob’s (played by Steven Yeun) idea. He dreams of starting his own farm, where he plans to grow Korean vegetables to sell to the increasing number of Korean immigrants coming to the United States.

The socialist in Louboutins: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shows fashion is for everyone

(11/13/20 12:30pm)

Late last month, progressive New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez graced the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in a white double-breasted suit with powerful structured shoulders and gently exaggerated peak lapels. The pantsuit has been well within the typical congresswoman uniform, but this one was different. She was wearing it for fashion, not for work. It looked delicate and luxurious. A look at the designer’s website shows it retails for more than $1,000.

A year of wear: why I quit buying clothes

(10/07/20 9:00am)

In August of 2019, I decided I wasn't going to buy clothes for a year. At the time, I’d been learning a lot about the fashion industry and how badly it pollutes the environment. When I looked in my closet, I couldn’t help but see the 700 gallons of water that it took to produce each t-shirt or the 1,800 gallons of water it took to produce each pair of jeans.

Feeling cute in my little government-mandated face covering

(10/06/20 10:00am)

The face mask may very well be the most prominent symbol of how COVID-19 has changed our day-to-day lives. Right now, illustrations of faces in masks are posted on the doors of local businesses and hanging on banners in uptown Oxford asking customers to “Wear a mask, please don’t make us ask.” While the question of “how long is this all going to last?” lingers in the air unanswered, the crowds of masked shoppers at the grocery store offer a suggestive answer: not any time soon.
