The Miami University women's swimming and diving team added another win to its season record, defeating conference opponent University at Buffalo 193.5-106.5 at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium.
Junior Lauren Wallace credits the win to the team's companionship.
"The team as a whole had a lot of fun," Wallace said. "It has always been a team goal to relax and have fun, which has proven to be the key of our success. We have so much fun together, which takes away the pressure to win and gets us excited to swim fast."
The RedHawks took first in 14 out of 16 events, including the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Chelsey Bruington, senior Kelsey Vehr and sophomores Leah Thorton and Bekka Westrick completed the race with a time of 1:45.90.
Westrick also placed first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.92 and first in the 100-yard butterfly at 56.06. Several other swimmers had multiple wins, including senior Megan Brunn in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.07 and the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:19.71.
Freshman Nikki Craft represented the diving team with wins in the one-meter and three-meter dives.
The men's swimming and diving team hosted Purdue University Oct. 29 at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Head Coach Pete Jennings was excited to continue the season.
"We have some talented swimmers and divers," Jennings said. "We were anxious to continue what promises to be an exciting season.
Despite a strong effort, the Big Ten squad proved to be too much for the RedHawks, and they were defeated 193.5 to 99.5.
Junior Chris Gunnels and senior Jason Hass contributed first place points to the team after winning several of their events.
Gunnels won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.09 and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle. Hass took first place in the 200 individual medley, earning nine more points for the team. For the diving team, junior Jim Beres took second in the one-meter competition.
The men's swimming and diving team continued their weekend as they hosted Cleveland State University Oct. 30. The RedHawks came back from a large deficit to secure a final and rare score of 150-150.
After losing the first few events and falling behind in the point system, the RedHawks struck back by winning several first place events of their own.
In the 200-yard freestyle, junior Brendan Melling took first with a time of 1:44.36. Sophomore Alex Reinhardt took second in the event, while sophomore Ian Joyce took third. The three wins combined to give Miami an additional 16 points.
Gunnels took first in the 100-yard backstroke, while Hass took first in the 100-yard butterfly with freshman Mike Cavanaugh following close behind for second.
The event became tied with the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, where two of Miami's teams placed, taking first and third place, earning 13 more points for the team.
