The Miami University women's soccer team ended their four game losing streak this weekend while finishing up a four game road trip. Miami played their games in Athens against the Ohio University Bobcats and Akron against the Zips of the University of Akron.
The RedHawks played Ohio on Saturday and for the third straight season, Miami won in overtime. Junior Jess Kodiak tied the game in the 90th minute, her seventh goal of the year, which is tied for the team lead. Sophomore midfielder Katy Dolesh won the game in 107th minute off a pass from Giselle Mangal. This victory snapped Miami's four game losing streak.
"Our back line played its best game of the year today and THAT's where it has to start," head coach Bobby Kramig said. "They kept it tight and together for the entire match which kept us in the game until the very end."
Miami's second game of the weekend was in Akron at FirstEnergy Stadium. Miami came into Akron hot and left even hotter. The Red and White, who had only scored two goals during their four game losing streak, scored three in an 11-minute span. Sophomore Kayla Zakrzewski scored in the 46th minute (her seventh of the year, which is tied with Kodiak for the team lead), freshman Emily Hyde in the 53rd minute off a corner kick and Dolesh in the 57th minute. The game would end with a 3-0 victory for Miami. This was redshirt freshman goalie Allison Norenberg's third career shutout and her first in MAC play.
This weekend, Miami will be hosting two Mid-American Conference (MAC) opponents, Northern Illinois University and Western Michigan University. The season is nearing the end and the 'Hawks are hoping to make a strong push for the MAC Tournament which begins the last Sunday of October. Miami is currently fifth in the MAC East Division with an overall record of 8-7-0 but a pedestrian conference record of 3-5-0.
If the RedHawks want to make the tournament or get a better seed, they need to win both games this weekend. Judging by their recent play, this should not be too difficult. Kodiak, the team's top scorer, is clutch down the stretch. The star of the weekend, Dolesh, was recently named the MAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
Kick-off for the Northern Illinois match is set for 3 p.m. Friday. The Western Michigan game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
