One win stands between the Miami University soccer team and the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division crown.
The Red and White (11-6-2, 4-4-2 MAC) fell Friday 1-0 for their second straight setback, but fought hard for a 1-1 draw against Western Michigan University Sunday. The point puts them in position to claim a division championship with a win Thursday at Bowling Green State University.
"The game was kind of weird," senior Brooke Livingston said. "It was windy and kind of scrappy. After Friday we wanted to come out hard because we came out flat before."
Sara Lund came out firing. Six minutes into the match, Lund gashed through midfield on a breakaway and found herself alone with the keeper. The forward then beat her adversary with a shot to the left side for her first goal of the season.
"I thought it was a much better effort by us today," Head Coach Bobby Kramig said. "I was pretty unhappy with the team on Friday. We were down 2-0 10 minutes into the game. We need to stop looking at other things and start with ourselves. We need to accept responsibility for everything that happens to us, the good and bad."
The bad came in the second half when the Broncos (8-6-4, 4-2-4 MAC) brought the burden. Brittney Pavlica finished a flick pass and beat Madison Ryan for the tying score. Both defenses tightened up and neither team could net the golden goal through two overtimes.
"We fought very hard today and as a result we earned a well deserved point on the road," Kramig said. "Road points are tough to come by. I was very pleased with the effort and we were very shorthanded today. We had a couple of injuries to Katy Dolesh and Sam Parrish. We did a super job of picking up the slack and I was very proud of the team today."
Kramig said senior leadership fueled the RedHawk machine Sunday.
"Brooke showed great leadership," Kramig said. "All of our seniors did. They pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and got it done today. I couldn't be more proud or pleased with them."
The grit of a champion should show through Thursday as Livingston and her fellow fourth years fight the Falcons at 3 p.m. in the regular season finale.
"All the seniors realized that these are our last couple games here and we really want to go out on a good note and end our season with a championship," Livingston said. "That's what we are going for. We know that we need to step up and work as a team."
