Campus activities continue during city-wide power outage

Classrooms, dorms and stoplights went dark as the power went out across Oxford and Miami's campus around 10 a.m.

"Conversations are going on with Duke Power," Dean of Students Michael Curme said. "Through Duke or our internal generators, power should not be out more than four hours."

However, the university has reported that power will resume by 11:30. All students and faculty are to follow the normal schedule, according to a Miami email update sent at 11 a.m.

Residence Directors also emailed students, addressing the outages in their buildings.

"Your key card will still let you into your building and apartments," Heritage Commons Residence Director Monique Frost said. "I have news that the city is working as diligently as possible."

Bell Tower Dining Hall reacted to the outage with an innovative solution.

"They were allowing students to purchase items that didn't require cooking and taking down their names, Banner ID numbers and what they purchased," sophomore Tom Briggs said. "They are going to input the purchases when the power is back on."

"Staff are still working to provide backup power on Oxford campus," the Miami Twitter account stated.

At 10:37 a.m., the same account said the power would be back by 11 a.m. Power returned to the Armstrong Student Center at 12:12 p.m. However, other locations on campus were still in the dark at the time of publication.
