The Miami University chapters of Kappa Sigma and Delta Chi fraternities are currently under suspension.

Miami's Delta Chi chapter is suspended after failing to meet requirements of a previous sanction that were set to be complete in February.

According to Chris Taylor, associate director of the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution, the chapter failed to submit a plan of action, including a chapter review, risk management review and development of new risk management plan, as well as complete a required alcohol program.

Furthermore, it was reported to the university that in March, individuals were seen on the deck of the house with alcohol despite a sanction prohibiting Delta Chi from hosting events with alcohol.

Despite an attempt to appeal the University Disciplinary Board's decision, the chapter is suspended until May 15, 2009 and must complete requirements of prior sanctions in order to be re-recognized by the university.

After re-recognition, the chapter will be placed on probation for a semester.

The national headquarters of Delta Chi still recognizes the chapter and is sending the assistant executive director to Oxford in September to analyze the situation.

"We'd like to see the situation ourselves and determine what we should be doing," said Ray Galbreth, executive director of Delta Chi.

Miami's Kappa Sigma received sanctions for damage and disorderly conduct. The chapter was reported to the university after an April trip to Pigeon Forge, Tenn. resulted in damage to rented cabins and behavior that was disruptive to other guests.

The Theta Upsilon chapter accepted responsibility but appealed the disciplinary board's decision in June.

According to Taylor, the appeal resulted in a decreased suspension from a year to a semester on top of a prolonged probation period.

The chapter is suspended from campus until Dec. 31 and is on probation until May 2011. The chapter cannot host, co-host or sponsor events with alcohol involved until Dec. 31, 2009.

The chapter will also have to pay for damages.

The Kappa Sigma national headqurters could not be reached for comment.
