Junior shortstop Jordan Petraitis winds up for a throw to first base against Bowling Green in Miami's series-clinching win Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the first series win of the season for the RedHawks, who stand in last place of the MAC East.

After two tight late-inning contests against conference rival Bowling Green State University, the RedHawks finally notched their first conference series win last weekend with an emphatic 13-4 victory over the Falcons.

Junior shortstop Jordan Petraitis, who went two for five on the afternoon with two RBIs, is glad to have the pressure off his back.

"I can't express in words (how relieved I am)," Petraitis said. "We've been so close every weekend. To get one (series) under out belt at this critical time of the season (is big)."

Head coach Dan Simonds couldn't agree more.

"It gives us confidence knowing we can (win a weekend series)," Simonds said. "It's been crazy some of the ways we've lost. We didn't take advantage (Sunday) to win the series, (but) it feels good (to win the rubber match)."

Freshman southpaw Tyler Melling earned his first collegiate victory on Sunday. He was more satisfied with how the win affected his team, however, rather than any individual accomplishments.

"(My first win) came at a good time," Melling said. "We're trying to get back in the playoff race. We're getting back in the thick of the (postseason) race."

Melling pitched five and a third innings, giving up only six hits and three earned runs.

The RedHawks manufactured 13 runs on only 11 hits, making the most of their opportunities throughout the ballgame.

Simonds said the Red and White was poised and patient at the plate.

"We had very controlled approaches (at the plate)," Simonds said. "We had productive outs and good 0-2 approaches."

The tide turned in the top of the third inning for the RedHawks. Down 2-1 with a runner looming at third base and only one out, Bowling Green botched a suicide squeeze attempt as third base runner Ryan Shay got caught in a rundown on his way to home. The Falcons' miscue turned a golden scoring opportunity into a base-clearing second out for Miami.
