The Miami University community is mourning the loss of one of its own today, after the death of Miami Hamilton first-year Evan Tiernan Friday, April 18.
According to an announcement posted on Blackboard Monday afternoon around 3:50 p.m., Evan was a graduate of Badin High School.
No details have been released as of yet, and one friend declined to comment out of respect for the family.
"It's tragic to lose a life whether you're the parents or the students or the professors who knew him," Claire Wagner, assistant director of university communications. "Here's this 19-year-old that had a lot of potential for the future."
A Facebook.com group, "Evan Tiernan: Friend, Brother, Musician," has already been created in Evan's honor. The group has already attracted more than 340 members.
On the wall posts, Evan is described as "a genuine guy … not to mention talented" and as one who brought laughter and smiles to any room. According to those who left messages, Evan was a writer and musician, but above all else, he is particularly remembered for his kindness and creativity.
The visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Avance Funeral Home at 4976 Winton Rd. in Fairfield. Out of respect for the family, funeral services will be for family members and close friends only.
A grief support group is scheduled for the Hamilton campus from 1:30-3 p.m. Friday, April 25 in the student services conference room in 103 Rentschler Hall. One-on-one counseling is also available.
If needed, Oxford students may contact the student counseling services at 513-539-4634, while Middletown students may contact student services at 1 Johnston Hall at 513-727-3440.
