Miami University alumnus Joseph Newlin will be filling the position of Oxford's finance director starting May 19.
According to City Manager Doug Elliott, Newlin swept his competition away with his solid background and qualifications.
"We were impressed with his background, education and experience," Elliott said. "He comes from Avon Lake, a city with a similar size to Oxford in terms of population and budget. We liked the fact that he is familiar with the area."
As finance director, Newlin will be responsible for overseeing the financial reports and audits for Oxford, Elliott said.
Oxford City Council first sent out advertisements of the vacant position when former Finance Director Harlita Robinson gave her notice of resignation at the beginning of January.
According to Elliott, Accounting Manager Heidi Hill was appointed as interim finance director to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position during the application process. She previously took over the position from Sept. 1, 2005 to April 3, 2006, the last time the position was left vacant during a hiring period.
During Hill's term as interim finance director, city council reviewed applications and conducted interviews until April 15, when councilors unanimously voted to pass a resolution appointing Newlin as the new finance director.
Currently, Newlin is the finance director for Avon Lake, a city outside of Cleveland, Ohio. However, after seven years with Avon Lake's local government, Newlin said he decided to return to Oxford for the first time since graduating from Miami and accept the new position.
But Newlin was not always interested in finance.
Newlin graduated from Miami in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in botany and first worked at Avon's Lakewood Nursery.
"It was after I was working at the nursery and injured my shoulder that I decided to try accounting," Newlin said. "I've always liked math."
Newlin then graduated from the University of Akron in 1990 with a second degree in accounting and worked with PCC Airfoils, an Ohio manufacturing company in Cleveland, Ohio for 11 years.
Elliott also said that Newlin will have an easy transition.
"I'm sure he will bring new ideas to the position and help continue to improve the operations we already have running here," Elliott said.
Newlin agreed that transferring to Oxford will go smoothly and said he is anxious to begin working.
"I'm looking forward to being back in Oxford," Newlin said. "It's a great opportunity and I'm lucky to be able to get this job."
