Miami University's chapters of Kappa Kappa Gamma (Kappa) and Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) will host a doubles tennis tournament to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation and Cancer Free Kids.

The event, with more than 140 participants, will take place at 2:30 p.m. April 20 at the Varsity Tennis Courts on North quad.

According to sophomore Christa Fetzer, Kappa's philanthropy chair, participants include mostly members of Greek chapters, but also unaffiliated students.

"About 30 sororities and fraternities are taking part," Fetzer said. "Almost all of the sororities are participating and a good number of fraternities."

Each fraternity and sorority paid a $40 submission fee for its four participants. Out of the pool of those registered, Kappa and PIKE will pair the partners and make up the teams. Each team is composed of one male and one female player.

"There were considerably more girls than boys," junior Ethan Basch, PIKE president, said. "Also, we didn't want a club (tennis player) girl and club (tennis player) guy to be paired together and dominate the tournament. We want people to have a good time, not pay money and get killed in tennis."

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Kappa and PIKE's regional philanthropic organizations.

Cancer Free Kids, PIKE's philanthropy, which will receive half of the proceeds, is a Cincinnati based nonprofit organization. Started by a Miami alumnus, the goal of the organization is to raise money for cancer research, according to the Cancer Free Kid's Web site.

"We love helping the community," Basch said. "We have close ties with the philanthropy, as it was started by a PIKE alumni and his wife."

The other half of the money raised will be donated to the National Kidney Foundation, Kappa's philanthropy. According to Fetzer, the money will specifically go to helping kids.

"It's specifically for week-long summer camps in Ohio for kids with kidney disease," Fetzer said.
