Ryan Jones, the senior captain of the Miami University ice hockey team, has been named one of the top three finalists for college hockey's most prestigious honor, the Hobey Baker award. He is the first RedHawk in school history to be nominated as one of the final three nominees for the award.

Jones led the 'Hawks to a school-record 33 victories during the 2007-08 campaign. Finishing the season with 31 goals, Jones placed second on the school's all-time scoring list with 90 for his career, 21 of which were game-winners. This tied him with two other players for the second-most game-winning goals in Division I history.

Being nominated for the award is an incredible honor. The accomplishment not only takes into account the individual skill of the competitor, but their leadership, service and academics, as well. Jones has been a poster child for each of these categories.

"Ryan Jones is an extraordinary athlete but he's a better scholar," said athletic director Brad Bates. "He's an extraordinary scholar but he's a better leader. He's an extraordinary leader but he's a better person. He's one of the greatest captains I've ever been around."

The former RedHawk has signed a multi-year contract with the National Hockey League's Minnesota Wild after he was selected in the fourth round (111th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He will be assigned to the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League and will wear sweater No. 10 with the Aeros.

Jones also cut more than 10 inches off his hair last Monday for the Locks of Love charity, which uses donated hair to make wigs for chemotherapy patients.

Head coach Enrico Blasi praises Jones for his nomination and achievements throughout his four years at Miami.

"Being named as one of the three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award is a great honor for Ryan Jones, the team, and our entire athletic program," Blasi said. "By the way he battled and performed on the ice, and by the impact he made in our community, Ryan represented Miami University as well as any individual we've ever had. We're extremely proud of him."
