April 9 will see the release of MIOX Student Records' first Extended Play (EP), featuring three songs performed by MIOX artists Sam Brewer and Zach Kanter.
The EP will be available free online to all students via the MIOX MySpace page, www.myspace.com/mioxmusic.
By putting the music online, MIOX hopes to attract more listeners and create a larger fan-base.
"We wanted to reach a broader audience, so people could get to know the artist and MIOX," said sophomore MIOX President Dan Albert. "The general goal was to create a new level within Miami's campus and reach new people we haven't been in contact with."
According to sophomore Eric Sunray, vice president of MIOX, an EP is a shorter version of a CD and resembles a demo.
To celebrate the EP's release, MIOX will be hosting an event at Stadium Sports Bar and Grille April 9. The party is open to everyone and MIOX musicians will be performing from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
"We're hosting the party at Stadium with two floors of music," Sunray said. "The bottom floor is a performance of our musicians, who will be performing all night. The upstairs will be DJ'd by Knuckle-Up Productions."
According to Sunray, Knuckle-Up Productions was started by himself and Albert earlier this year and is made up of three Miami student DJs. Through MIOX records, Sunray said the DJs can be booked for a variety of events, including fraternities and sororities socials.
The release party will have a cover charge for attendees. From 10 to 11 p.m., cover will be $2 for those over 21 years of age and $5 for people under 21. From 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., it will cost $3 for those over 21 and $4 for those under 21.
According to Sunray, MIOX has high expectations for the party.
"It gives people the opportunity to listen to live music as well as go upstairs to DJ'd music," he said.
MIOX was able to record the EP through an endowment fund granted to them in October 2007. The Lannigan Endowment Fund allotted MIOX $1,500, with most of the money going to the EP recording, Sunray said.
