The Miami University Counseling Hotline (MUCH) and Student Outreach (SO) organization will be hosting a 5K Run for Resolution in honor of Mental Health Awareness Week, with the proceeds benefiting the Jennifer Leigh Kynkor Scholarship.
The organization was created in September of 2005 and promotes mental health awareness, education and knowledge of community agencies and services to students.
"MUCH and SO is a relatively new organization and we work with the Community Counseling and Crisis Center to promote mental health awareness and knowledge about the services it provides," said Jennifer Dunn, Miami senior and president of MUCH and SO.
According to Dunn, the 5K is the first race put on by the organization and participants can register the day of the race.
The race will begin at 9 a.m., with the start and finish line in front of Millett Hall.
The $10 participation fee, as well as all proceeds, will be directly donated to the Jennifer Leigh Kynkor Scholarship, a fund that provides assistance for a first-year graduate student pursuing speech pathology and audiology, with an interest in autism.
The scholarship is in memory of Jennifer Leigh Kynkor, a Miami student who was killed in a car accident in the fall of 2003.
"Jenny would have been to thrilled about the run," said Becky Young, Jenny's mother. "I think it's really cool because they're doing it for mental health week. That falls squarely within the area that Jenny had so much compassion for-people with mental and physical disabilities."
Dunn said the idea to contribute the proceeds to the scholarship fund came from reading an article about Kynkor.
"We wanted (the race) to be somehow incorporated to Miami and mental health," Dunn said. "We saw the article about Jennifer and her family and contacted her mom and she was very enthusiastic about it and we were comforted by that."
The scholarship was permanently endowed in December and the first scholarship will be awarded later this year.
In addition to the race, MUCH and SO will be promoting its purpose on-campus through other venues. During Mental Health Awareness Week, March 29-April 3, MUCH and SO will be handing out information providing information about the 5K and the Community Counseling and Crisis Center.
"We are also putting up signs on the slant walk that is a mental health path, with 25 signs going up Tuesday and Wednesday with mental health facts and information," Dunn said.
In addition to this week, all MUCH & SO members volunteer for the crisis hotline at the Community Counseling and Crisis Center.
The organization also plans events around campus for National Suicide Prevention Week in the fall and speaks at Talawanda High School health classes about mental health issues and the services it provides.
