With his three points Friday night, Davis, who will most likely be joining the Chicago Blackhawk organization next year, earned his 130th career point as a RedHawk.
Despite being outshot 13-3 during Miami's brutal first period attack, Ohio State did not go quietly into the night. Digging deep into the heart of the RedHawk defense, the Buckeyes came up with their first goal as freshman Kyle Reed put one past Effinger late in the second stanza.
Answering back, Miami extended its lead back up to three goals with the help of junior Brian Kaufman and senior captain Ryan Jones who traded the puck off with each other four times before sending it into the back of the OSU cage.
The Buckeyes cut into Miami's 4-1 lead with another goal from Reed who one-timed the puck to beat Effinger.
"They buried on a couple chances, but at no point in the game was I really worried," Jones said. "I thought we were under control, it just so happened that a couple pucks went into our net."
Silencing a frenzied Miami crowd, Ohio State made it a one-goal game when Cory Toy tossed the puck through traffic to net the team's third goal with just six minutes remaining in the game.
In an effort to knot the affair, OSU pulled its goalie during Miami's third and final penalty of the game to create a 6-on-4 man advantage. However, Effinger shut the door to preserve the RedHawk victory. He turned away 26 of 29 OSU shots on goal, giving him a record of 4-2-1 all-time in games against
Ohio State.
"It was an exciting hockey game," Jones said. "A little too close in the end, I could have done without that."
With the bye that the team earned with its second place regular season finish, Miami will now enjoy a week off in preparation for the second round of the CCHA playoffs.
"It's a (type of) game that we're going to be in the rest of the way," Blasi said. "We have to learn to compete. We have to learn to take care of pucks, so (this game was) good preparation for our team for the next couple of weeks. We have to make sure that we are ready to go next weekend."
The best-of-three series will take place March 14-16 at Steve Cady Arena.
