On the issue of electability, this board believes that while Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.) creates a new voice of optimism in the race, the historically unrepresentative primary selection process does not fully demonstrate the middle class support for Clinton. Additionally, Clinton's depth on policy issues will allow her to match a Republican challenger on issue debates as the campaign wears on into November. While we feel that she can easily become a polarizing figure, we trust in her campaign to be able to maintain itself through the pressures of this exceptionally long campaign process. We think Obama's calls for unity have the potential to marginalize important voters who may not completely agree with his beliefs in November.
On the issue side of the debate, this board believes that while both Clinton's and Obama's platforms are very similar, it is the critical differences that allow us to support Clinton as the best Democratic candidate. She has already established diplomatic ties solidifying her foreign policy skills in more than 80 countries. Her background in world affairs and international networks will help create a bridge for bipartisan politics to engage the United States in the best foreign policy decisions. Ultimately, Clinton's distinct and specific stances stand out more than Obama's. Additionally, this board feels that Clinton would be in a better position than Obama to follow through on her proposals if elected president, as she has stronger ties in and out of Senate and has more of a history of supporting bipartisan legislation.
With regard to the Republican primary, this editorial board endorses Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) for the Presidential bid in 2008. McCain's military experience and knowledge of foreign affairs allows him leverage over the other candidates vying for the party's nomination. Known as a "straight shooter," McCain's knowledge, risk-taking and determination will be critical for the Republican's aim for the White House. His clear superiority over the remaining candidates in the Republican race is supported by his wide knowledge of serious issues facing this nation and moderate economic stance that will aid in reversing the polarization the current administration has created.
