After months of campaigning and hard work, Associated Student Government (ASG) cabinet member hopefuls had their final say in Monday's debate with Thursday's elections rapidly approaching.
In total there were seven candidates running for the five publicly-elected offices within ASG. The offices include student body president, vice president of the student body, vice president for student organizations, and vice president of campus activities.
Each candidate was asked a series of questions with one minute to respond, followed by a 30-second rebuttal from the opposition.
First to debate were vice president of campus activities hopefuls sophomore Nathan Zwayer and junior Peyton Stanforth. In this position the candidate elected would be the head of the Campus Activities Council (CAC), which works to bring performers or prominent speakers to Miami University's campus.
Both candidates expressed a concern for school spirit and participation in student activities on Miami's campus.
"Tradition, honor and pride is something I hope to bring to Miami's campus," Stanforth said. "I want to make it that every student knows their own Miami heritage."
According to Zwayer, a way to increase school spirit is to encourage attendance at all campus events and provide collaboration between the various councils of ASG.
The next debate was for vice president for student organizations between junior incumbent Brian Wood and junior ASG senator Jonathan McNabb. In this position the elected official would be the head of the ASG funding committee and hear funding requests from Miami's student organizations bi-annually.
When asked about his lack of communication skills with student organizations in the past and how to remedy his mistakes, Wood said a separate e-mail account had to be created strictly for ASG funding purposes.
"I believe we need to create separate e-mail accounts for student government and revamp the funding Web sites so they can be more clear and transparent," Wood said.
