Miami University students are accustomed to the question, "Do you want an air conditioner or a refrigerator in your residence hall room?" but starting next fall, Miami students will also be able to participate in a selection of new upgrade options including cleaning services, laundry service and digital television channels.

According to sophomore Courtney Cochran, president of the Residence Hall Association (RHA), these upgrades were discussed by the Residence Hall Management Advisory Group and are in response to suggestions made by students through
comment boxes.

"These upgrades are things that have been requested over the past few years by Miami students through housing and dining surveys of the things students like and dislike about Miami," Cochran said. "Mostly it's come about recently because old contracts are expiring and they're doing new contracts and can do new things."

The "new things" on the agenda for next fall include a campus wide laundry service for students. Cochran's report explained that this optional service will cost $295 per semester with one pick-up in each hall per week.

According to Larry Fink; assistant vice president for housing and auxiliaries for Housing, Dining and Guest Services (HDGS); current Miami residence hall staff will process the students' laundry in current on-campus laundry facilities at non-peak times.

Cochran's report explained there will be two different plans for the room cleaning service: $95 per semester with one cleaning per month or $145 per semester for two cleanings per month.

According to the report, Miami residence hall staff will not move students' clothes or belongings to clean the room and the cleaning will be limited to hard surfaces and vacuuming the rooms.

Fink said that a set cleaning schedule convenient for students will be established once the details are finalized for both the laundry and cleaning services.

In addition to these services, HDGS plans to offer enhanced television service to residence halls next fall in coordination with Information Technology (IT) Services. Cochran's report explained that a new digital signal will be offered, providing a clearer picture. In addition, students will be able to lease a digital cable box for the academic year and choose from different packages including 100, 200, or 250 channels, and premium channels such as HBO and Showtime at an additional cost.

Terrific news! It's about time! Although our son washed clothes and kept up at home, dorm living is a whole different ball game - more stress, less time etc. (Continued…)

Great News. Honestly, Miami has completely been losing the recruiting battle for those students requiring maid and laundry service. Seriously, how can Miami expect to recruit the best and brightest without offering 250 channels of digital cable and pay movie channels? Just when I think this place can't become any more self-parodying, I read this. (Continued…)

You must be kidding - maid and laundry service??? The most important part of the college experience is learning how to survive on your own. Nobody is going to clean for you or do your laundry when you enter the big, bad work world. (Continued…)

What has happened to personal responsibility? Can we hold their hands anymore? Miami Alum '93 is correct. College is as much a place to learn to care for one's self as it is learning engineering, economics, or history. (Continued…)

Cleaning and laundry services? This is just a ridiculous idea. These kids need to grow up. The nights I spent writing papers and running down to do laundry at 4 a. (Continued…)

As the parent of a Miami Student and former Alum, this saddens me. Miami has decided to take on the role of parent, rather than allowing students to make the mistakes neccessary to learn from and grow as individuals. (Continued…)

I find it ironic that Miami is using these "improvements" to attract more students. When I was a student in the 70s, a common theme we vigorously objected to was "in loco parentis", aka, Mother Miami. (Continued…)
