Maurices clothing store, located along U.S. Route 27 North, will celebrate its one-year anniversary with a $500 donation to a local nonprofit charity.

The Oxford community will soon benefit from the one-year anniversary of the opening of Maurices clothing store with a $500 donation to a local charity.

According to part-time Maurices manager Whitney Smith, the store, located along U.S. Route 27 North, opened in February 2006, selling young women's clothing, shoes and accessories.

In honor of their one-year anniversary of business, Maurices is giving a $500 donation to a nonprofit organization of the community's choice.

"We want to give back to the community," Smith said.

Customers are invited to drop into the store to nominate a charity that they wish to receive the donation. According to Smith, any customer can nominate his or her favorite nonprofit organization. According to Jenna Bertram, a Miami University senior and Maurices employee, the rule is one vote per customer per day. The process for nomination is simple, according to Smith.

"They can come in, fill out a little application and put it in the box," Smith said.

The applications will be tallied up at the end of the voting period, and the charity with the most nominations will receive the donation. The voting period began Feb. 1 and ends Feb. 17.

Smith said this donation is a company policy for all new stores opening in the last year as their one-year celebration.

"I think that it is very generous of them," Miami first-year Jessica Gruen said. "Other stores should follow their example by helping the community."

The process is good, according to Bertram, because it gives the community direct say in where the donations are going within the community.

"I do like that the community is getting to pick," Bertram said.

Bertram said the store is fairly new, and still needs to get their name out into the community. According to Bertram, Maurices business is increasing gradually since the store's opening.

Bertram thinks that the policy of giving back on their anniversary will hopefully bring Maurices more business by getting their name out into the community.

According to Bertram, the program mainly benefits the community of Oxford, serving as a form of appreciation for welcoming Maurices last year.

"I think it's really great to be able to use our celebration and give back to the community that's been helping us this past year," Bertram said.
