The city of Oxford is currently accepting applications for two full-time positions within the city government from individuals invested in the efforts of building a stronger community.
The two open positions are economic development director and recreation programs coordinator. Both positions call for the candidate to show great interest in furthering community involvement within Oxford, while simultaneously helping to further the economic development of the city.
According to Director of Oxford Parks and Recreation Gail Brahier, the two positions are vital to the continuing growth of the community.
"Oxford has seen huge jumps in its economic and community growth, and we are hoping that by offering new employment opportunities within the city, we will be making it easier for more citizens to get involved full time," Brahier said.
While the recreation programs coordinator is a new position within the city of Oxford, the economic development director has been in place for several years. However, Oxford City Council decided not to fill the position until former City Manager Jane Howington resigned and the current City Manager Doug Elliot took her place.
As economic development director, the candidate will be expected to attract and maintain Oxford's business industry, such as the creation of new business ventures, while focusing on expanding the present business base. They would also provide guidance to the local Community Improvement Corporation-a nonprofit group devoted to pursuing greater economic development within Oxford.
Oxford Vice Mayor Ken Bogard said that economics comes from all areas; therefore, it is important for the candidate to look into ways that would enrich Oxford as whole, not just from a business point of view.
"This player will be a player in overall development, not just business, but a player from standpoint of how do we make Oxford attractive to young people coming in; a player in realizing an overall vision for Oxford," Bogard said.
