As the Miami University basketball and hockey teams continue to battle during their regular season play, Miami fans will have a chance to take on the University of Cincinnati-for charity.

The Miami athletics fan club, Red Alert, is sponsoring a toy drive this week, competing with Cincinnati's booster club, Rally Cats, to collect the most toys this holiday season.

"Red Alert is trying to get more involved with the community," said Red Alert President Brian Grigsby. "We want to reach out beyond athletics."

Red Alert will battle the Bearcats with the help of the Campus Activities Council Spirit Board, Circle K, Beta Theta Pi, the women's swimming team, men's golf team, synchronized swimming team and the women's field hockey team. According to Grigsby, these were groups with which Red Alert had a previous working relationship.

"It's a sense of pride for the university," Grigsby said. "We're joining together student groups that'd ordinarily not get together … We want it to be more of a joint, united push."

Junior Taylor Dobler, Campus Activities Council Spirit Board co-chair, hopes the event helps to unite the university.

"We want to work together and promote athletics through volunteering," she said.

Donation boxes were set up around campus and throughout Oxford Monday for the competition.

Grigsby said boxes were placed in all the dining halls, the Recreation Sports Center, Millett Hall and Goggin Ice Center.

Boxes were also set up throughout Oxford at Coldwell Banker College Real Estate, First American Cash Advance, Kofenya, Lane Public Library, the UPS Store, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

Grigsby also said donations were taken during the men's basketball game Tuesday night as well as the women's game the following evening.

"We're pushing for alumni and ticketholders (to donate toys)," Grigsby said. "We want it to be a community effort, not just a
student effort."

Students' last opportunity to contribute will be during this weekend's home hockey games against University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
