Freezing temperatures, full stomachs and distance were not enough to keep ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts from attending the Nov. 23 Thanksgiving Hat Tournament to benefit Sojourner
Recovery Services.
The tournament was held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Joyce Park in Fairfield, Ohio, and for $25, participants received food, water, a Frisbee and five guaranteed games. All together, Sojourner Recovery Services raised more than $2,000 through fees and donations for their general resources, including funding for basic programs.
Brent Russell, the development director of Sojourner, organized the first tournament in 2006 to raise money for Sojourner. Russell's love for ultimate Frisbee, a sport he has been playing for more than 20 years, was one inspiration for the tournament.
"(Ultimate) is very fun," Russell said. "It is an easy sport to learn."
Team members were chosen from a hat. Due to the proximity to Thanksgiving, teams were given names such as The Turkeys, The Gobblers and The Yams.
"It's a fun way to mix it up and meet new people," Russell said.
Russell said that the majority of participants were college students who had returned to Oxford and, after a day with the parents, were looking for a way to get together and relax with friends. And students came from colleges across the country including Ohio State University, Richmond University, Wright State, Harvard University, University of Dayton and Dennison University.
Kate McInerney, a senior at Dennison University, is a veteran and a die-hard ultimate Frisbee player.
"I've never dated a guy that didn't play ultimate Frisbee," she said. "I love to talk about ultimate any chance I get."
McInerney has been playing ultimate Frisbee since she was a junior in high school. Now she plays in college and even started the first women's team at Dennison. She heard about the Thanksgiving Hat Tournament through the Cincinnati Ultimate Community and brought her boyfriend and friend to come play with her.
