Waiting 4 hours for Miami hockey

Issue date: 11/16/07 Section: Sports
Some of the most die-hard Miami University hockey fans arrive at Goggin Ice Center hours before the doors open. I never quite understood what one did for hours on end, so I decided to join a group of my friends and get to the Goggin at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, even though they didn't let people in until 6 p.m. Here is the journal of my four-hour wait on the Goggin stairs.
2:06 p.m.: We arrive at the Goggin. There are eight of us as we make our way to the stairs to begin our four-hour wait. All I carry with me is a deck of cards, a Twix bar, 3 Musketeers bar and a bottle of water.
One person brings a portable TV for when boredom is at an all-time high, while another brings poker chips. We make our way to the stairs only to find we aren't the first people in line. Some students have been here since 11 a.m.-I thought we were crazy.
2:43 p.m.: Not even an hour into our wait and I've already eaten the Twix bar and drank half the water. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best at rationing things. I've leafed through a Sports Illustrated magazine, read every article, already I'm bored.
3 p.m.: Four of us break out the cards and begin playing Euchre. My left knee has begun twitching; probably should have it looked at. A couple of people walk by and ask us what we are waiting for. One person thinks we are in line for a study hall-I only wish I could be making this up. My left foot has officially gone to sleep.
3:38 p.m.: The 3 Musketeers bar is gone, as is the water. I'll probably regret this in an hour or two. We played three games of Euchre and got bored. I would try to stand up and stretch, but my left foot can't support any weight.
We decide it's time to watch some TV. The only channel we pick up is PBS. They are having a telethon. Wish I had donated some money, perhaps they could have shown something good.
4:02 p.m.: On a plasma TV far away we can see that the University of Michigan has lost to the University of Wisconsin. My friend from Ohio State University is happy, I'm from Illinois-I don't care. We decide to put the OSU game on the radio and start playing a No-Limit Texas hold 'em tournament.
