James Rowan, an Oxford resident and president of the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO), will be ending his one-year term Jan. 1, 2008.

Founded in 1910, ASBO International is a professional association of 6,000 school business management professionals that spans more than 30 countries. According to its Web site, the mission of the ASBO is to provide programs and services to promote the highest standards of school business management practices, professional growth and the effective use of educational resources.

"Being involved in organizations like this gives professionals the opportunity to seek out best practices and to creatively work on issues with other institutions," said Michelle Thomas, director of student development for the Farmer School of Business.

Rowan was elected in 2004 to become the president of ASBO in 2007. Before becoming president, he had to go through the ASBO series of steps leading to his presidency. Rowan became vice president in 2005, president elect in 2006 and president in 2007. He will continue in the volunteer organization as past president for 2008.

"Our organization represents the business side of schools," Rowan said. "We are made up of primarily business managers and our main focus is to promote programs for school districts to enhance education."

Rowan said he first became involved on the National Board of ASBO in 1998 and served on the legislative committee, lobbying legislation in Washington D.C.

Rowan served for seven years on the State of Ohio Board and for five years on the National Board. He has one year to go on the National Board before becoming past president.

"The main focus while I was in office was strategic planning, membership development, public awareness, leadership development and certification," Rowan said.

Throughout Rowan's time volunteering with the ASBO, he has served three years as director, where his main responsibility was to serve as a liaison to various committees. As vice president, his role was to work with vital policy issues and strategic planning, and as president he worked to promote the ASBO's strategic plan.

In 2008 Rowan will take on the past president position, for which he will continue to serve on the executive committee of ASBO International, will oversee elections and will work with the recent president's transition.

"Organizations such as this help professionals to build networks and stay connected to what drives the engine of our institutions and business schools," Thomas said. "It also serves as a wonderful source and exchange of ideas and information with other great business schools."

While Rowan is not volunteering for ASBO International, he holds a full-time position as director of School Programs for Ohio School Plans Insurance. His main responsibilities are to implement programs for Ohio schools.

"When it comes to school business a lot is at stake," Rowan said. "It is up to our organization to determine the best ways so that the most money can be spent on schools and children."
