After nearly 100 years, the Miami University Women's Choral Society, now officially called the Miami University Choraliers, is still present on the Miami campus.
Established in 1908 with approximately 25 members, the Choraliers have grown in size and quality-remaining a significant part of the Miami campus, according to junior Ashley Benson, secretary for the Miami Choraliers.
A reunion event has been planned for alumni weekend in June, in which many Choralier alumni will return to help celebrate the history and success of the group.
"Everyone is very excited," Benson said. "It's great to be able to connect with the alums and our history. It shows how far we've come."
In addition to the alumni celebration, a piece of music has been commissioned by Patty Morrison, a Choralier member who graduated in 1980. The music was written by composer Joan Szymko and will be presented by the Choraliers April 23 in Kumler Chapel. The Choraliers' celebration follows closely on the tail of Miami University's Glee Club's 100-year celebration this year.
The Choraliers will also have the chance to show off their skills to more than just the Miami community, as they will be touring Italy and Greece this coming summer as a part of the 100th
anniversary celebration.
"This anniversary shows how far women have come at Miami," said Mollie Cox, president of the Choraliers, in reference to the 100-year milestone. "The evolution of women's role on campus is the real reason to celebrate."
The Choraliers are typically comprised of about 80 female students from a wide variety of different majors, but they all share a passion for singing.
The Choraliers are under the direction of William Bausano, who also conducts the Miami University Chamber Singers and teaches voice and choral courses at Miami.
In December, the Choraliers will be performing their annual Ceremony of Carols concert, which has been in existence for about 25 years.
