Pledge-a-meal, Writers' Harvest and the 30-Hour Famine are all working toward the same goal on Miami University's campus during Hunger Awareness events this November-eliminating hunger both in the U.S. and across the world.
Pledge-a-meal annually deducts $3.25 from each donor's meal plan to help food banks in Oxford, Hamilton and Cincinnati. This year, the organizers hoped to collect 2,007 pledges. Pledging ended Nov. 9, and pledges will be deducted Nov. 13, according to Assistant Director of University Communications Claire Wagner.
Concluding the Pledge-a-meal event will be the Writers' Harvest, sponsored by Miami University's creative writing program at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 13 in 100 ART. The event will consist of members of the creative writing staff reading excerpts of their own works. Director of Creative Writing at Miami Eric Goodman will be reading an excerpt from his own novel-in-progress, Identity Thief.
"It's what I'm currently working on and the newest is always the most exciting," Goodman said.
Goodman has been directing Writers' Harvest at Miami since it began 15 years ago. He said there is great significance to Writers' Harvest being a part of Hunger Awareness.
"It's an opportunity for students to help us throw the book at hunger, a chance for us all to give back a little and for students to sample some of the wonderful writing taking place here at Miami," Goodman said.
Visiting assistant professor of English, Kelly Magee, will also be reading at the event from her novel-in-progress, Go. Her reading will be about how a major character grew up watching her evangelical parents preach to the poor.
"I think Writers' Harvest is a wonderful way to show how creative writing can be used to raise awareness of real issues like homelessness and hunger," Magee said. "I'm happy to be a part of it."
According to Goodman, the suggested donation for this event is $5 for students and $10 for faculty. All proceeds of this event will benefit the Food Pantry in Oxford and the Freestore/Foodbank in Cincinnati.
