This upcoming week, dubbed SuperFan Week by the organization Red Alert, Miami will be hosting a number of sporting events and Red Alert wants to up student attendance at these games.
Kicking it off will be a weekend hockey series against the University of Notre Dame Friday and Saturday, followed by the first home men's basketball game of the year against Xavier University Tuesday and concluding with a nationally televised home football game against the University of Akron Wednesday.
Additionally, Red Alert, along with the Campus Activities Council Spirit Board and RedHawk Traditions, will be hosting Miami Madness at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 at Millett Hall. Miami Madness will officially kickoff the beginning of the men's and women's basketball season, but is also hoping to get students more involved in Miami University athletics, according to Red Alert president senior Brian Grigsby.
Highlights of the night will include charity free throws by President David Hodge, a special guest appearance by former Miami basketball star Ron Harper, a Charlie Coles look-a-like contest, raffles, a student slam dunk competition and an opportunity for one student to sink a half-court shot and win free textbooks for all of their classes next semester from DuBois.
According to Grigsby, the goals of this event are to celebrate last year's basketball MAC Tournament Championship win, get students and fans excited about the men's basketball game Tuesday and increase pride in Miami athletics.
"One thing we want to do is increase the student attendance at games from what we had last year," Grigsby said. "On top of that, we're going through a big theme this year of not just getting people excited for one typical thing, but trying to get our campus as a whole to have pride in our school and to do so through athletics."
The event seems to be getting students excited for the upcoming season.
"It sounds like a lot of fun and I'm glad that Miami's athletics are being showcased during this big week," junior Kiernan Sedam said. "This event sounds like a great way to get people excited so they'll actually go to the games."
