Why "That Girl" is hurting Miami's female population

I love women. They can bring out the best or the worst in a man, allowing us to see who we really are. Unfortunately here at Miami University, most of my dating experiences have led me to believe that I have done something wrong.

Then again, I may be striking out with the wrong women.

I honestly thought that until I read a student's article titled, "Get over it! You're a senior girl." The article outlines how the author feels about being a senior and not having boyfriend, mentioning that she does have a year to fix that-after all, graduating alone would be a travesty.

Seriously? Is this how you actually feel and is this what you actually try to do?

A big thanks to all of you who feel this way at this university and those of you who share this mindset are the reason why when I go home, people ridicule me for going to a preppy, stuck-up school. The piece should have been titled, "How to get your M.R.S. degree."

Despite having to bow to the porcelain god for 15 minutes, this article did get the gears turning and I realized that it's not all her fault. She's not just a senior girl and it's not even that she goes to Miami, but everyday we see these girls walking around campus and no matter how hard you try, you can't help but notice them-"Those Girls."

Now, not every girl that goes to Miami falls into the category of "That Girl." There are many nice, intelligent and real women at this university. Too bad they fly under the radar because they aren't as ostentatious. While walking to class, it's much easier to point out the young lass on her cell phone, complaining, "Just put more money in my account, Daddy!" than it is to see the gorgeous and reserved co-ed walking the other way.

It's just terribly tragic that this spoiled and obnoxious girl creates a horribly negative stereotype that is then cast out on the entire female population here at Miami.

While their male counterparts, "Those Guys," are interested in nothing but Heineken, Jager bombs, lifting, popped collars and their new haircuts, "That Girl" is more concentrated on things such as: boys that could become husbands (preferably with money), shoes, "does my butt look fat in these jeans/skirt?", stalking "cute boys" on Facebook.com, and looking their best for every occasion (class, going out, working out, sleeping, etc.). While I am not an expert on the female gender, and never will be (I'm OK with it because to me, 90 percent of women are crazier than OAR's game of poker), I do feel that I must probe and question why these ladies do these things.

How refreshing to read! I was one of the girls in jeans and a ball cap when I was at Miami, and I never "got" all the time those other gals took to primp. (Continued…)

I have to say I really loved this article. I'm pretty sure we can function without a guy by our side. And although I'm not prone to wearing sweats, I never take more than 15 minutes to get ready (most of the time). (Continued…)

It must have taken large amounts of courage or even "sexual frustration" to have written such a contreversial article, and I applaud you for your bravery however while I am sure that many people would agree with your point of view I feel that it is nothing but a misintrepreted stereotype of all college girls. (Continued…)

Although I am not in a sorority I agree with Tex. I think to often people are pressured into roles of society. You grow up, graduate high school, go to college, find a spouse, get married and live happily ever after with your 2+ kids and dog in a suburb far far away. (Continued…)

Why the hell is Condy Rice a laughable joke? That lady is three times smarter than myself, or any professor here.

Paris Hilton and female role model do not belong in the same sentence. (Continued…)
