He is the guy everyone waits for by the door; the one all the first-year students try and fool. He is the first person you call on a Friday night; chances are you have his number on speed dial and could spot him on campus. Mario Scrimenti is that guy-the beer delivery guy.
Scrimenti, a Miami University junior, started working at The Den uptown this September. He knew the employers at The Den and frequented the store, then one day they said they were hiring.
"I was a good customer, and I became good friends with the employers," Scrimenti said. "They said they had a position open so I filled out an application and was hired on the spot and I've never looked back."
The Den employers look for specific traits when hiring a new employee and are continually impressed by Mario's skills.
"To work at The Den you gotta have a car and a driver's license," said Mike Zimmerman, assistant to the regional manager. "Mario is a good employee because he's one of the fastest delivery guys. He's also one of the most excited employees I've seen."
Scrimenti works three days a week, however those works days differ depending on demand. Sunday through Wednesday he is typically "on call" and Thursday through Saturday he is "on the clock."
"When I'm on call I may make 10 deliveries, and I get paid per delivery," he said. "I just sit at home and when someone places a delivery I run out to the store pick up whatever they ordered and deliver it."
The Den is open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon until 10 p.m. Sundays.
Mario is "on the clock" on the busy nights when there are deliveries constantly being placed throughout Oxford.
"When I'm on the clock I am pretty much driving around all night," Scrimenti said. "I'll go pick up beer, cigarettes, whatever from the Den and make the deliveries, then run back to the store."
The Den stores all its beer in the back of the store and it is brought forward as the deliveries begin to mount up. However, according to Scrimenti, one kind of beer holds a sort of monopoly in Oxford.
