This past weekend people in Butler County were running-with a purpose.

The organization PARACHUTE: Butler County Court Appointed Special Advocates held its first 5K Walk and Run Saturday.

The results of the Walk/Run were presented by the Prescott Race Coordination, with more than 100 participants from all areas of Ohio entering the race for approximately $20 to $25 dollars per person. No exact total of money raised by the event could be provided.

The event, which took place at 9 a.m. at Fort Liberty Park in Butler County, was dedicated to raising funds for child advocacy. The proceeds raised by the Walk/Run will contribute to some of the many expenses PARACHUTE has, including gift cards for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers, children and their families, as well as advertising services.

PARACHUTE: Butler County Court Appointed Special Advocates appoints adult volunteers to become responsible for representing children in court. These CASA volunteers are supported by the PARACHUTE organization, and provide assistance to children during their court cases. The CASA volunteers acquire the necessary information to adequately represent the children.

"The event is important because we want to keep public awareness high about child abuse and how individuals can keep children safe by volunteering to be an advocate or by supporting the agency," said Chris Schultz, executive director of PARACHUTE.

The 5K Walk/Run focused on raising funds for the organization, which, according to Schultz, depends on these donations.

The Walk/Run was open to the public, and families were strongly encouraged to attend-and some Miami University students chose to partake in the fund raising.

Miami first-year Jenifer Murray attended the event in support of the efforts of the organization.

"It was a very enjoyable experience," Murray said. "Everybody was there for such a good cause and truly wanted to contribute to the focus of CASA."
