St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, since its opening in 1962, has offered free care to any child diagnosed with cancer, despite their race, religion or economic status.Â
The hospital is run entirely through donations from the public, with the average donation being $25.09-it costs $1.2 million to run each day.
To raise this money, St. Jude's has formed nation-wide philanthropy organization, Up 'til Dawn, which now has branches on college campuses across the country-including Miami University.
"The Up 'til Dawn program raised $4.8 million last year, which means that the hospital could have run for four days just on the money raised by college students around the country," said Alysa Kopech, chairman of the executive board of Up 'til Dawn at Miami.
Locally, Miami's Up 'til Dawn raised more than $34,000 for St. Jude's last year, in just their first year, and is looking to go even higher, according to Kopech.
The Miami branch of Up 'til Dawn has 10 official members, Kopech said, with an unidentified number of unofficial members.
Now, the group is looking to recruit members to make up a number of teams that will collectively write letters to family and friends, asking them to donate to St. Jude's.
"Our goal this year is to raise $50,000," Kopech said. "This is definitely possible because in just one year we have worked to expand the event and have already seen a greater interest than last year."
Students fill out and send pre-written letters with a pre-paid envelopes to family and friends who, in turn, can donate to St. Jude's directly. Each letter is coded with information specific to Miami, as well as the student who sent the letter, so they are able to track how much the school as a whole and individual teams raise.
Students can form teams of six, sign up and fill out team registration forms. They are available in 356 Shriver and can be returned there as well.
Then, all teams will meet at an All-Team Meeting, which is scheduled for 5-10 p.m. Oct. 24, in the lobby of Hamilton Hall-with food and entertainment for all of the students who participate. The second event will be celebration of the work that all of the teams have done. This event, the Finale, will be held 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Nov. 16, in Withrow Court and will have inflatables, music, games and food. There will also be a variety of prizes at the Finale for the participants.
