Male attempts school box, computer barcode switch

At 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, OPD officers were dispatched to Super Wal-Mart in regards to an alleged thwarted robbery. According to the report, an older, heavy-set white male with short dark hair and a mustache drove into the store's parking lot in an older dark green Ford minivan.

Reports state the man entered the store and proceeded to switch the barcode of a computer and a school box in the back of the super center. While he was attempting to pay at a self-checkout station, an employee noticed that he was having difficulty with the large box while trying to demagnetize the anti-theft strip on the packaging.

Allegedly, when the employee went to assist the man, the employee noticed that the computer rang up as a $.97 school box. The employee then alerted management. When the suspect realized he was being watched, he left his cart in the lawn and garden section of the store, got into his van and drove away. OPD has no leads at this time.

Senior receives citations after police threaten arrest

At about 2:30 a.m. early Wednesday morning, OPD was dispatched to 16 E. Collins Street on a noise complaint at a residence. As Officer Matt Chadwell was writing a citation for another resident of the house, a male stood in front of Chadwell asking him to give the other individual a warning.

Later identified in the report as Miami University senior Gregory Ladd, he continued to argue with the officer about the other resident's offense. Ladd allegedly had bloodshot/glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol.

Officer Chadwell repeatedly asked Ladd to walk away, and when he allegedly did not, Chadwell called dispatch for backup. As Ladd persisted, the officer told him that if he did not disregard the situation and walk away, he would arrest Ladd. As Ladd turned to leave, he encountered an officer on bike patrol and began pleading his case about Officer Chadwell. The officer on the bicycle allegedly implored Ladd to continue walking on.

According to the report by the second officer, Ladd walked away, and returned four or five more times. When Ladd refused to leave, he was put under arrest after being "belligerent and abusive" and was transported to Butler County Jail. He was cited with disorderly conduct and persistence.

Police cite MU sophomore during assisted walk home

Around 1:50 in the morning Sunday, Aug. 26, OPD Sgt. John Buchholz was walking on patrol along Church Street when he observed two males attempting to walk Miami sophomore Hannah Copeland, 20, between them. According to reports, the female was unable to stand on her own, and she fell to her knees while Buchholz was watching. Reports state that Buchholz stopped the three, at which time Copeland unsuccessfully attempted to stand on her own.

Copeland, according to reports, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage, her eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and she could barely speak to be understood. She was cited for underage intoxication.

Miami male admits drinking unknown amounts of alcohol

While on foot patrol uptown around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, the Oxford Police Department's Officer Geoff Robinson witnessed a verbal argument between a male on the sidewalk and another male inside the outdoor fence area of Skipper's Bar. The officer approached one of the males whom he identified as Miami University sophomore William Simendinger. The male smelled of alcohol and when questioned by the officer, he admitted to drinking that evening but not what or how much he had to drink. According to the reports, another male then approached the officer after he was told to move on. He was identified as Miami first-year Kyle Brown, 19. He also smelled like alcohol according to Robinson. Both Simendinger and Brown were brought to the Oxford Police Department and cited for underage intoxication.
