"There will be more emphasis in the position on being aggressive about marketing the university brand and finding ways to communicate the good things that are going on at Miami to a broader community," said John Skillings, associate vice president for academic affairs, who was also in charge of coordinating the search for Little's replacement.
Skillings is enthusiastic about what Tron will bring to the position.
"She had a strong background in communication and marketing," Skillings said. "She's a Miami grad, so she's certainly familiar with the Miami community."
According to Skillings, Tron interviewed very well and had strong credentials and was a good fit for the position.
Tron will work part time in September and will begin working full time Oct. 1.
As for Little, Skillings said that the university was happy to help accommodate his desire for change and that he will continue to do some speechwriting for the president.
Little is also teaching a course in crisis communication and issues management and helping with Miami's Inside Washington program-a summer and semester program in Washington D.C. where political science, communication and journalism students take courses as well as partake in an internship.
"I need to visit some embassies in the D.C. area related to my project with international students, and while I'm there I'll be doing a lecture with the Washington program," Little said.
The class he will be teaching is a 400-level course designed primarily for students in the field of strategic communication.
"We look at what happens when things go wrong when you're dealing with crises and controversies, from 9/11 and the Virginia Tech tragedy from last spring or less serious crises," Little said.
Little has taught before, but only one-hour courses.
"A lot of this is new to me," Little said.
