Seven months since its conception, Miami University's only student-run record label will be kicking off the semester with a free-admission performance Friday at the Oxford Presbyterian Church.
The concert, which will take place at 8 p.m., will feature all of the current MIOX artists; Evan McFadden, Sam Brewer, Zach Kanter and Eric Sunray, while also introducing the Brandon Abbot Trio-a band that recently got in contact with MIOX because they were looking for exposure and a chance to play.
Two second-year students, Dan Albert and Eric Sunray, who also act as president and vice-president of MIOX Records, created MIOX. The two spent the summer planning and networking for this upcoming performance, as well as future endeavors for MIOX.
"We worked a lot in the summer-brainstorming and researching," Albert said. "We have appointments with President (David) Hodge and various deans of (Miami)."
They plan on continuing to approach the administration to share their vision for MIOX Records because gathering official backing is necessary for both further legitimatization of their organization and for funding purposes.
"We're going straight to the administration to find out who we could approach for funding … we hope to get their support," Sunray said.
Securing more funding is important for the future of MIOX, as last semester both Albert and Sunray were disappointed with the amount of funding they received from Associated Student Government (ASG).
"Last year, we applied for the normal administrative funding cycle and got about $400-$100 short of our request," Albert said. "At the time, we hadn't realized how much everything would cost, like to get bands in, for example. This year, we applied for a bit more."
Even though they were low on funds, the creators of MIOX were able to put on a benefit concert this past April at Balcony, which featured all of the MIOX artists.
"The benefit concert in April went pretty well," said McFadden, a second-year guitarist. "The people (at Balcony) said we put on a good show."
