In the aftermath of last year's Associated Student Government (ASG)'s funding crisis, many members of the ASG executive cabinet have been working this summer to ensure that history does not repeat itself.
According to ASG President Jens Sutmöller, he has regularly met with Vice President of Management Brian Wood, Treasurer Brendan Buholzer and faculty adviser Dennis Roberts over the summer-brainstorming ways to make ASG's funding process
more efficient.
All efforts go toward avoiding incidents of mismanaged funds, such as when the former Vice President of Management John Woods was impeached last semester for misallocating $77,000 to three different organizations.
"After last year's little debacle, we devoted a lot of time to funding … hopefully making it more equitable," Sutmöller said.
Sutmöller said these funding changes are preliminary and will still need to be approved by the student senate before anything is enacted.
According to Wood, their plans include changing the funding process from three to two cycles per school year.
Wood stressed the importance of shifting the funding process to two cycles, or once a semester. During his campaign for the position of vice president of management last spring, Wood said that the three-cycle process was too complicated for organizations and committees to adhere to. Additionally, the reason Woods was impeached was because he funded three groups money in a meeting outside of the three prescribed funding meetings.
Because of the density of the funding bylaws in the ASG Constitution, Sutmöller and Wood have also been at work writing an ASG Funding Handbook, which will explain the funding process in layman's terms. Sutmöller said he was unaware of ASG having anything of the sort in the past.
"I've been looking for (something like the handbook) since I was a freshman," Sutmöller said. " … It's tough even for ASG members to get a good grasp on what ASG funding is all about."
