"He used to go to Miami and watch baseball, football and basketball but now he can't get around as much," Dave Wheeler said. "Though he is still a big fan."

After graduating from Miami, Wheeler worked as a teacher and baseball coach at Roosevelt Junior High in Newark, Ohio. Later, he became the principal at Adams Elementary school in Hamilton, Ohio, where he worked for nearly four decades.

Wheeler is looking forward to Friday and getting a chance to be on the diamond once again.

"I am very excited to be back on the field," Wheeler said. "I am looking forward to it and hope to see some of my old buddies."

Wheeler is not the only athlete in his family. He passed the athletic gene down to his son - who played baseball for Wilmington College - and his grandchildren Scott, David and Leah.

Scott is the assistant head coach for Purdue University's wrestling team. David wrestled at Miami and Leah played soccer for Bowling Green University.

Wheeler says his father has always been a big influence on him.

"He is a straight shooter, honest, religious, a good disciplinarian," Dave Wheeler said. "Everyone who knows him speaks very highly of him."
