The Middletown Art Center is showcasing local teens' artwork with its annual student art show, "Spring Fling - Tomorrow's Artists Today."

Area high school students, ages 13 to 19, who are within a 50-mile radius of Middletown were eligible to enter a piece of artwork in the show, which opened April 20.

This show is alongside an standing art show with pieces from students, faculty, and alumni from Miami University in Middletown and is in celebration of the branch campus' 40th anniversary in 2007. The exhibit is displayed both at the Middletown Art Center and Miami Middletown, according to Michael Hieber, the coordinator of MUM's show and a Miami instructor of art. This year, the MUM art exhibition included 90 pieces contributed by 14 former art students from Miami Middletown, five current art faculty or staff and several community members.

Hieber said that due to the lower number of entries the center received for Spring Fling, the art center asked Hieber to extend the length of the 40th anniversary MUM exhibit and show it alongside Spring Fling.

"We were originally going to end the show this month but since the art center didn't get enough submissions for a full show they asked us to have our work stay up," Hieber said.

In addition, due to the low amount of entries received, the show will not be juried.

The 40th anniversary show was a combination of both a juried and invitational show. A juried art show means that judges screen applicants' artwork submissions based on criteria, such as type of art that a show wants to display, Hieber said. An invitational show is one in which artists are formally invited to submit their work in a show.

Jean Langan, associate professor of art at Miami, believes the MUM show is an integral part of the Middletown community because it is not only a way to display art but also to carry on a tradition in the city.

"(The show) has always been a central community event in Middletown," Langan said. "It's been quite a historical feature of the city for years."
