Lentini said that it was the reputation of Miami's liberal education that made the position appealing. He said President David Hodge's inaugural address reflected his own philosophy of education.
Lentini will also be responsible for the departments of architecture and interior design, art, music and theater.
"It is a challenge," Lentini said. "But that is what leadership is about. I enjoy that challenge."
As academic dean, his primary responsibilities will be fund-raising for the department, making sure that faculty is supported with the latest knowledge, and ensuring the quality of the academic programs for students, Lentini said. He will also provide vision and common goals for the four departments in the School of Fine Arts.
Senior graphic design student and president of the American Institute of Graphic Artists at Miami, Clare Sturni, commented on the leadership that the new dean will provide.
"I think it will be important to have someone leading the art program that has vision," Sturni said. "It takes a unique personality to lead a bunch of unique individuals in the art program."
As a student in the School of Fine Arts, Sturni commented that it will be beneficial for Lentini, a creative artist, to bring ideas to the department. She hopes that Lentini will lead the faculty in a way that will support students' education and camaraderie.
Lentini received a bachelor of music in composition from Wayne State University, a master of music in composition from Michigan State University and a doctorate of musical arts in composition from the University of Southern California, according to the School of Art, Media, and Music at TCNJ.
His compositions have been performed internationally by ensembles such as The Sinfónica Universidad de Concepción in Chile and the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra in Poland.
In 2000 and 2003, Lentini received a Detroit Music Award in the category of "Outstanding Classical Composer."
