The journal's mission is to offer research findings and promising practices, which will guide the efforts to transform institutions, inspire colleagues, and engage campuses of higher education in the pursuit of inclusive excellence, according
to Stevenson.
"I've been involved in the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education and I've been a member of APA for 25 years (and) as the board for NADOHE began to talk about what the journal would look like I offered to take the lead and managed to negotiate with APA to be the publisher," Stevenson said. "It's rare that two national associations create joint ventures of this sort, so it's very exciting."
Last semester, Miami was put on the 2007 Princeton Review College Ranking list as the university with the fourth most homogenous sudent population.
Stevenson said the journal may help Miami's reputation where diversity is concerned, in that it will create a positive way to bring attention to the diversity work being done at Miami.
"Nationally Miami has an uneven reputation, some aspects are positively recognized, and some aspects need some polish … this is an opportunity for Miami to do that polishing, and help enhance its reputation for being a campus that is serious about diversity," Stevenson said. "That's one of the reasons I pursued this - I believe good work is happening here and by posting the journal here, it will draw national attention in this area."
According to Stevenson, the journal is likely to feature writings such as essays by university presidents talking about how their universities are dealing with diversity in a positive fashion. Also found within its pages might be summaries of
research shared by different universities to help benefit one another, Stevenson said.
"It's important to remind folks that it's not enough to do good work on campus, when we discover a promising practice it's part of our obligation to share that nationally, this journal provides the ability to do this," Stevenson said.
Stevenson said faculty and staff as well as students will be involved in creating the journal.
