Senate passes new bill

Resolution allows minors to fulfill thematic sequence
The Miami University Senate passed a resolution Monday that will allow more academic minors to fulfill thematic sequence requirements. This new policy will allow any minor to take the place of a thematic sequence as long as the minor is not in the same department as the student's major. Director of Liberal Education and Assessment Jerry Stonewater brought the resolution before the University Senate to propose the change in policy. …

MU hosts conference on homeless

Miami University's Center of American and World Cultures (CAWC) hosted the "Homeless in the World: A Human Rights Perspective" conference last Friday and Saturday at the Shriver Center. The conference welcomed 68 organizations from all over the world whose mission is to combat homelessness, refugee problems, modern-day slavery and other human rights issues. The conference also featured eight guest speakers including Don Whitehead, director of the National Coalition for the Homeless; Steve Walker, from the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services; and Katherine O'Donnell, professor and chair of the department of sociology at Hartwick College. …

'Poetry in Motion' performance spreads awareness

The National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD) staged "Poetry in Motion" at Presser Hall on Sunday afternoon. Opening with an introduction to American Sign Language that included several renditions of the American Sign Language alphabet, the NTD performed several poems, including "Casey at the Bat" and even sang, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," in sign language. "I liked how they did the alphabet stories," said Katie Boyd, when asked about her favorite part of the show. …

New communication fraternity opens chapter on Miami campus

Lambda Pi Eta, a national honorary society for communication students, is opening a chapter at Miami University. Charter members will be inducted tonight at 7 p.m. at Kumler Chapel. Lauren Warner, incoming president of Lambda Pi Eta, said the organization recognizes communications students who are exceptional in the field; have earned outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies; and are leaders in the department. …

MU prof helps write new educational book

Helping educators communicate their ideas to policymakers is the objective of a new book, co-authored by Allen Berger, the Heckert professor of reading and writing at Miami University. The book, Educators on the Frontline: Advocacy Strategies for Your Classroom, Your School, and Your Profession, was also co-authored by Jill Lewis and Kathleen Stumpf Jongsma. Berger has a background in newspaper reporting and has written approximately 400 articles on reading and writing education. …
