Miami joins outreach program

Food stamp project educates, provides aid to Butler County
Butler County will host a new food stamp program in conjunction with Miami University to provide aid to those in need. The Food Stamp Outreach Program began when Lifespan and the Shared Harvest Foodbank received $12,000 in aid from a portion of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grant for $125,000. Organizations involved in the program include LifeSpan's Independent Living Assistance program (ILA) and Shared Harvest Foodbank's Feed, Educate, Empower and Deliver program (FEED). Because many people are unaware that they qualify for food stamps and other assistance, they hope to spread the word about the program at multiple food pantry locations. …

Oxford rapper on a 'Mission'

He's white. He's a rapper. And he's not Eminem. Oxford rapper "Mission Man," otherwise known as Gary Milholland, 26, is trying to make his way into the spotlight. Proclaiming his music type on his Web site as "very self-expressive hip-hop from a nerdy straight-edged nice guy," Milholland has released fifth album Antis Trype, which includes his most popular song "Chillin' at the Papa." …

Camp America offers multifunctional facilities

From square dancing to church retreats, Greek events to bonfires, College Corner's Camp America has been an important gathering place for the Oxford community as well as the tri-state area. Positioned adjacent to Hueston Woods, the 26-acre sports and adventure camp has hosted a variety of events throughout its 36-year existence. Part owner and President of Camp America Jay Fry expressed the facility's ability to accommodate a range of activities. …

Ingram Hill to return to Oxford

Uptown will be welcoming back to the stage the band Ingram Hill April 9. The band visited Oxford in January when they opened up for Brick Street's Gavin DeGraw performance. Now the group will be returning to headline their own show. According to Mike Hadgis, the entertainment and marketing manager for both Brick Street and 45 East, Ingram Hill's first performance went over extremely well. …

Study reveals changes in nursing home patients

The past 10 years have seen changes in the residents of Ohio nursing homes, a recent report said. The report, entitled "A Review of Nursing Home Resident Characteristics," was published by Robert Applebaum and Shala Mehdizadeh of the Miami University Scripps Gerontology Center. In 2004 more than 14 percent of nursing home residents were less than 65 years of age; which is double the percentage from 1994. The average age for residents has dropped from 83 years of age to 79.4, the report states. …
