Writers face-off in football debate

Abstract:

Nice debate. My two cents: Ryne will be virtually impossible to replace. In my estimation, he's the greatest receiver to ever don the Red and White, and wasn't all that far behind the more heralded Ted Ginn Jr. in terms of game-breaking ability. Card was very good, but tailed off considerably as a senior after a tremendous junior campaign. As for quarterback, there is no way, absolutely no spitting way in hell that Kokal relinquishes the job if he remains healthy. No, he doesn't possess Belton's howitzer of an arm, but he did everything you could have asked from quarterback last year operating behind the worst offensive line in college football. Montgomery is squarely on the hot seat and he can't afford to let a freshman grow into the position. He needs to win now...

Like what I read guys! Can't wait to see the hockey Q&A!

While I disagree with some of what was said, I still enjoyed the debate and I'm glad to see it in the pages of the Student.
Obviously it's impossible to simply replace guys like Ryne Robinson and Joey Card. However, after going 2-10, how much could there losses really affect the team? Honestly, I think there is going to be improvment on both sides of the ball and players will step up and fill the holes left by the players that are gone. Joey Hudson will be an important leader on defense, and I think he will fill holes Card did. And as far as the position goes, Miami has a very good, very deep defensive backfield. On the other side losing Ryne...Miami may have the best overall group of receivers in the history of the school. Sean McVay and Dustin Woods are very good receivers with experience. Eugene Harris and Armand Robinson look to be very exciting players with great potential. Chris Givens is coming in as a freshman and is likely to see playing time, and coaches say he might be the best wide receiver they've ever coached when it's all said and done.
As far as the player with the most pressure, I strongly disagree with that guy being Mike Kokal. I thought he performed admirably last year considering the protection he got. Obviously there is always a certain amount of weight on the shoulders of the quarterback, but I think the real pressure lies on the offensive line. They were horrific last year, and they need to protect the QB better and open more holes for a running game that was dismal last season.
I think five or six wins is a good outlook for this season, but the MAC is always wide open so it's hard to say.

Did you really say that Miami might have trouble with the "atmosphere" against Minnesota? The dome is rarely even close to capacity for football games against Michigan, Ohio State, and other big names. Miami is "just another MAC school" to them, and I'd be surprised to see the place half full for that game - which I don't call an "atmosphere", let alone one that would be hard to deal with.
Go Hawks! See you in Minneapolis!
