This is the dumbest idea I think I have ever heard. Student-athletes are basically getting paid (through scholarship money) to go to college, and it is their job to fulfill that scholarship by participating in intercollegiate athletics. They already have the privilege of discounted tuition, books, etc. (although I realize not all athletes are on full scholarship), and if they are so overwhelmed with all this work, they can quit and get a real job to pay for school.

Also, your science student example is a poor one. Athletics is an Extracurricular activity (meaning not required to get a degree) and it is a privilege to be an athlete. We already have enough athletes at other institutions (Ohio State, Michigan) who make a mockery of the term "student-athlete.' Let's not bring that to Miami.

I don't see this as being a whole lot different than marching band members earning credit for participation in marching band. They rehearse a full week before school starts, plus 1.5 hrs/day (more if you're in percussion, guard, Shakos, etc), several hours before home games + home games. Many of them are music majors and some are recieving some sort of scholarship money. They get 2 credits (some sections 3).

This is nothing against the the marching band, which I myself was a member of.
