U. Senate supports living wage

Abstract:
The Miami University senate voted 22-19 Monday in favor of a resolution to support a living wage for Miami staff.

"I'm happy that this passed," said Mark Sawyer, vice president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). "I'm sure the union is happy with this too....

How about unclassified staff? I do not see any mention of this in the article. Many of these people are in the professional ranks (i.e. people with 4 year bachelor degrees) and are grossly underpaid. Many of the classified staff are stuck with whatever position they have at Miami and have to live with it and fight for whatever crums the University will throw at them to shut them up. Unclassified staff with degrees simply leave to go elsewhere. I left for over a 50% increase. The argument from Miami is "benefits make up the discrepancy". My answer simply put is, "no it does not". They spend lavishly on buildings, sports, etc. but attempts (and is rather successful at it) to cut corners with salaries for all personnel (both classfied and unclassfied). Human Resources at Miami is simply ignorant to competitive salaries and can care less if someone stays or gets wise and leaves.

Once again a feel-good resolution coming out of University Senate. Why does this not surprise me? Revenues are historically low so.... let's arbitrarily increase salaries $2/hour across the board! It amazes me how practicality goes by the wayside when a cause-titled bill comes up for debate. I wonder what the vote would have been if the bill had been titled "A Bill to Increase University Expenses by $4 Million by Providing Pay Increases Without Regard to Job Performance?" Same bill, different title - I'll bet it wouldn't pass.

It's amazing how the "progressive change of institutions" always seems to come with a price tag that those supporting it can't figure out how to pay. Oh well, at least they can all get together, pat themselves on the back and congratulate themselves on doing something that felt good. I can't wait to see next year's financials...

The next time you hear any of the faculty on U. Senate demanding change, tell them you don't have any.
