Colgate names Herbst as president

Abstract:
At the end of spring semester, Miami University will say farewell to Provost Jeffrey Herbst as he accepts a position at Colgate University as its 16th president.

Herbst was unanimously appointed to the position by Colgate's board of trustees Monday afternoon, according to Colgate's Web site....

Wow, Miami's loss is Colgate's...well...uhh...Colgate's LOSS.

Seriously, what did they see in a guy who oversaw:

Lowered admissions standards
Failed fundraising campaign
Massive drop in USN&WR rankings
Financial bankruptcy

Seriously, what's not to love about Herr Herbst?

One down; one to go. Now can some clueless university please take Hodge off our hands.

You outed yourself as a Miami alum with your ignorant comment, there was no need to to let us know when you graduated by posting it in your name. Don't you have anything better to do than make bitter comments about a school you supposedly graduated from years ago? Congrats on making it out of Oxford Herr Herbst...this sinking ship won't drown your career.

This seems to be the modus operandi for Miami. Exploit Miami's resources, make a mess, and move on. In the case of the really poor performers (see Garland)they simply remain on Miami's payroll and fade away. Either way, both alumni were correct to say that Miami has a mess on their hands. The scariest part being that Hodge can essentially promote a "yes" man and run rampant.

I seriously doubt if '93 alum really graduated from here---it's just another disgruntled faculty member or small minded townie. Miami alumni don't care enough or pay this much attention to the level of detail you quote--and they certainly see the difference between fact and fabrication. Fox news is looking for more people like you speak in superlatives as if the sky is falling. Try not being so dramatic chicken little!

Herbst didn't oversee the fundraising campaign. Miami has a VP for advancement - and Hodge oversees her.

Its unfair to blame Herbst for anything he doesn't oversee. Not sure where admissions or finances fall, but I highly doubt three of the four items you blame him for have ANYTHING to do with a Provost's job, which is to be in charge of academics.

You can blame him for the increased emphasis on graduate programs and faculty research over undergraduate liberal arts education. Miami's heritage and focus on undergraduate education are actually against the criteria used to judge a 'research university' in the USN&WR rankings. They want to see tens of millions spent on research (not a Miami characteristic).
