Miami implements hiring freeze

Abstract:
"Everything's on the table."

That's what Dionn Tron, associate vice president for communication, said about Miami University's current financial situation.

In an e-mail Oct. 20, President David Hodge addressed the immediate implementation of a hiring freeze that will last through June 30, 2009....

HIRING FREEZE?

WELL DONE HODGE AND COMPANY. YOU SAW THE GLITTER OF ALL THE NEW TRAPPINGS AND OOPS NOW YOU SENT THE UNIVERSITY INTO A TAILSPIN. YOU NEED ENROLLMENT AND YET YOU JUST INCENTIVIZED EVERY POTENTIAL STUDENT TO GO TO SCHOOL ANYWHERE ELSE BUT MIAMI. DOES ANYONE TRUST THAT KIDS WILL KNOWINGLY CHOOSE TO TOLERATE LIFE ON CAMPUS UNDER THE RULE OF YOUR TOTALITARIAN REGIME FOR TWO YEARS?

NO APPROACHING STUDENT SHOULD BE WILLING TO LANGUISH UNDER THE ALL EMBRACING IDEOLOGY SET FORTH BY MIAMI'S SOCIALLY STUNTED BOARD AND PRESIDENT. THROUGH MIAMI'S OVERT CONTROL OVER THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND STUDENT FINANCES, MIAMI'S RESTRICTION OF PERSONAL FREEDOMS, MANIFEST PERSONALITY MOLDING, USE OF MASS SURVELLIENCE AND WIDESPREAD USE OF TERROR TACTICS, MIAMI HAS CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT MORE AKIN TO IRAN THAN OHIO.

Let's build some more $60 million "academic" buildings. And let's make sure that the Dean's suite in each new buildings is bigger than most faculty homes. Lets also make sure that each new building has fewer classrooms than currently available in the existing residence.

Never a shortage of money when it comes to lavishing $$$$$$ on administrators. Students, by contrast, be damned! Dittto faculty.

It would be nice if we had one, just ONE, administrator at Miami who actually cared about education.

It seems unfair that Hodge is asking departments to make budget cuts and go without necessary staff while he rakes in a salary of $380,000 per year. Here's another idea: focus on quality education, not building useless parking garages.

Hodge is a egomaniac who thinks he can con the entire Miami community. Mark my words, he is just as intent in turning Miami into a watered down version of Ohio State as Garland was. Garland, however, was at least honest about his intentions.

Hodge is a con artist. He mouths all of things about undergraduate education that Miamians wants to hear. He engages in useless publicity stunts like his broomball team to endear him to the students while taking their eyes off his real agenda.

That agenda was clearly spelled out in last year's state of the university address where two of the top items mentioned were: a) doubling the percentage of graduate students at Miami and b) doubling the amount of externally funded research at Miami.

Does this sound like a return to Miami's roots and reemphasizing of undergraduate education after the Garland regime or does this sound like a verbatim continuation of Garland's policies.

Wake up, Miami. Hodge is Garland in a broomball uniform.

I just can't wait until next year. When it is time for us, the staff, to get our yearly raise. We probably won't get Jack Sh@t. But as long as Hodge gets his almost 11 percent raise we will be alright. All joking aside, I would rather them do a hiring freeze than have a massive layoff.
