Swiss heroin rehab plan fails to solve addiction problem

Abstract:
In an effort to battle heroin addiction, Switzerland recently voted to make a program, in which the government supplies addicts with heroin, permanent. Through the program, nearly 1,30a0 people receive heroin injections at 23 centers across the country in amounts just enough to numb the craving....

Swing and a miss, editorial board. The main point of the plan, from what I gathered, was to reduce crime and to keep drug addicts off the street. Heroin, as you might know, is a highly addictive drug, meaning that it's very difficulty to kick the habit. People addict to this drug will do almost anything to fix their craving, ie. rob, kill, sell their bodies, roam the streets, etc. Yeah, they still have the habit, but goodness, once you regulate the ability to receive the drug, you help prevent a number of the aforementioned things that people would do for it.
Finally, you talked about it being a poor investment. According to the World Health Organization, for every dollar spent in the system, 12 dollars were saved in law enforcement, health, and legal costs. Is that a poor investment?

The editorial board of The Miami Student fails to present the full picture of the Swiss voting process and the results of this particular vote. During the very same voting process, the Swiss people rejected decriminalization of marijuana. The Swiss rejected the decriminalization of this drug as they think it promotes drug tourism. The Swiss people decide this as a whole as it is a direct (pure) democracy where all people will vote on issues; decisions are decided by pure popular vote. Switzerland has one of, if not the top, quality of life in the world per recent analysis by market leaders (and personal experience). Criticizing this program shows a lack of focus by the editorial board considering other tragic events that occurred in the past week.

So I keep hearing about this Swiss initiative... despite all the controversies I find this action is a noble one, somebody thought about those drug addicts. I guess now heroin addicts around the world seriously consider moving in Switzerland.
