The Miami University community mourns the loss of Matthew Healey, a first-year student from Hingham, Mass.
Matthew contracted swine flu two weeks after starting class at Miami and died Saturday in Cincinnati.
Claire Wagner, associate director of university communication, said the news was devastating.
"Any time we lose a student, we grieve," Wagner said. "It's not just feeling sorry for family and friends but about the future (of) Matthew Healey and what he might've done or who he might've helped. We trust a lot in the students … you're our future."
Throughout the time Matthew was in the hospital, Miami stayed in contact with his family to provide support, according to Vice President of Student Affairs Barbara Jones.
The community council of Morris Hall, where Matthew was a resident, is collecting donations and signing condolence cards for the Healey family.
"They have cards they've made that people can sign and their intention is to send flowers to the family and depending on how much they collect some tribute to Matthew," Jones said.
Medical Director Gregory Calkins, Student Counseling Services Director Kip Alishio and Jones held a hall-wide meeting Sunday evening to inform students of resources for questions about health and wellness.
"(The meeting) was designed to let people know what resources are available," Jones said. "The grieving process happens in very different ways for different people."
Matthew lived with three men in Morris.
Jones said the university is committed to providing support to Matthew's roommates.
"They have a difficult time," Jones said. "They were the closest ones to Matt here, and so (we're) making sure they have the support that they need."
