A new thematic sequence policy allowing sequences to have more than one Miami Plan Foundation (MPF) course got a stamp of approval from university senate Monday.

The new policy, presented by John Tassoni, Miami University director of liberal education, would "increase the range of courses faculty can propose for thematic sequences."

Tassoni said the idea for the policy change came about when he received an e-mail from a professor who felt two MPF courses were fitting in one thematic sequence.

"There are some instances when one foundation course lines up nicely with another foundation course," Tassoni said.

Madelyn Detloff, associate professor of English and women's studies and the program director of women's studies, was enthusiastic about the new policy.

"I wholeheartedly support this," Detloff said. "Sometimes a foundation class in a department would be a great middle class in that sequence."

The proposed policy stated six credits in each thematic sequence must still be at the 200-level but the idea is that students will carry knowledge from a 100-level MPF class to a 200-level MPF class.

"It's not just moving on an ascending sequence," said Kate Rousmaniere, chair and professor of educational leadership. "You're moving across different disciplines and different departments."

Mathematics professor Mark Smith was the only senator present who opposed the policy.

"Thematic sequences are labeled as advanced, and it seems to me if it's advanced it shouldn't have any more than one foundation course," Smith said.

Tassoni said the new policy was created only to give faculty the option to create different thematic sequences.

"Nothing in this says that you have to," Tassoni said, of offering two MPF courses in one thematic sequence. "It just says you may."

The new thematic sequence policy also highlights students taking more MPF course in general. Because of the Advanced Placement (AP) policy approved last year, which awards credit for student scores of a three or higher on AP tests, students are taking fewer MPF courses. With the new thematic sequence policy, students would have the opportunity to take more MPF courses.
