Cutting coupons may be a thing of the past with College Mobile Deal's text message discounts.
According to the College Mobile Deals Web site, "Our goal is simple. We want to save you money without you needing to do any work … all you have to do is show a text message, so you will never need to print or clip any coupons."
College Mobile Deals was created by Bruce Twersky and introduced to Miami University in January 2009.
After buying rights to Miami's campus, senior Matt Viane and junior Jeff Grubbs now own and run College Mobile Deals on campus.
Viane said Miami was one of the first campuses where College Mobile Deals was introduced.
As of Sept. 3, Viane said Miami's campus has 4,000 students signed up for College Mobile Deals.
Viane said there are two ways to sign up for this service. Text MU to 833-61 (standard text messaging rates apply) and customers will receive an average of one text message coupon per day.
"It cuts out all the printing," Viane said. "My goal for the daily text is to have one solid text go out."
Customers can also go to the College Mobile Web site at http://www.collegemobiledeals.com to sign up. The Web site contains instant printable coupons and lists Oxford businesses and their menus.
To stop receiving these texts, just send the word STOP to the same number.
"(Students) can try it out and opt out anytime," Viane said.
Miami students said they intend to take advantage these discounts.
"I like how it lets students know about coupons and deals uptown because what college student doesn't like to save money?" said sophomore Sarah Wenstrup.
Since Wenstrup signed up for College Mobile Deals less than a week ago, she said she hasn't used any coupons, but plans to in the near future.
Sophomore Jen Treglia said she used a coupon and saved $5 when she got her hair cut at Salon Signature Sept. 4.
"I was planning on getting a haircut," Treglia said. "I received the text message coupon at the perfect time."
In order to recruit new businesses, co-owners Viane and Grubbs said they "hit the streets."
"Basically we are building relationships with (business owners)," Viane said. "We cater to each business individually."
Viane said 25 businesses are listed on their Web site, but he estimated anywhere from 30 to 40 businesses in Oxford have participated in College Mobile Deals marketing.
Business owners have enjoyed marketing through College Mobile Deals.
"It brings customers in for me and my sales double for the day," DP Dough Owner Beau Hiner said. "It's easy marketing to get your name out there."
Viane said he believes College Mobile Deals is the newest marketing trend, especially since college students spend so much time on cell phones.
"It's a great way to hit the market," Viane said.
Viane said co-owning College Mobile Deals is a lot of work, but receiving a paycheck and gaining valuable business experience is worth the effort.
Miami isn't the only campus using College Mobile Deals.
According to the College Mobile Web site, Arizona State University, Florida State University, Kent State University, Ohio University, University of Arizona and University of Kansas are also using marketing via text messaging.
